A Profile

The Sathya Sai School, Pililla is based on the following two key principles:

• End of Education is Character;
• Education is for Life, Not Merely for Earning a Living

It is dedicated to the promotion of education as “Educare” (Latin), which means “To Draw Out”. Every human being embodies five overarching values – Love, Truth, Right Action, Peace, and Non-violence. These apply across all, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, culture or nationality. The purpose of education should be to "Draw Out" these values that are inherent in every being. The Sathya Sai School in the Philippines and all over the world are founded and run with Educare as the anchor.

The Sathya Sai School, Pililla, Philippines, demonstrates that these five values can be seamless infused in all subjects that are taught under the curriculum of the Department of Education, Government of Philippines. The School was inaugurated on 6 May 2000. The School is located in Pililla (about 75 kilometers from Manila) in Rizal Province, on its own property, with 10 class rooms.

On the principle that education is not a commercial object, no fees are charged. At present, 148 children are enrolled in KGII to Grade 6, with 5 teachers.

The Sathya Sai School, Pililla, is proud to be one of the only 42 such schools across the World. There are 12 Sathya Sai Schools in Asia; 15 in the Americas; 8 in Africa and Middle East; 2 in Europe; 5 in the Australasia/Pacific region. Bringing out innate values cannot be a commercial pursuit. The schools are run on a strong premise that education is not a commodity, and as such it should not be commercialized. Hence, the schools do not charge any tuition fees.

The Sathya Sai Schools foster unity of the three major aspects of the human personality: thought, word, deed. Such unity enhances one's spirituality, and helps the human mind turn toward goodness and greater conscience and self awareness that in turn result in good character.

All Sathya Sai Schools follow the respective national education curricula. But, through innovative teaching techniques, the teachers integrate human values into all subjects. The techniques include: silent sitting and meditation; examples closely linked to values; competitions that help reflect on values; projects that help develop a sense of helping and sharing what one has with others.

The five overarching human values (Love, Truth, Right Action, Peace, and Non-Violence) subsume a large number of other values: cooperation, dedication, forbearance, morality, responsibility, reverence, virtue, discipline, acceptance, devotion, and kindness. Such strong focus on human values means that education is for life, not merely to earn a living from an economic point of view.

The Sathya Sai School, Pililla, follows all these principles, and it does not charge any tuition fees. At the same time, teachers should be fully respected and adequately compensated for their loving services. Individuals dedicated to the School’s founding principles contribute time and financial resources to support the School. While free education need not mean support only for the poor, a number of children at present in the School come from low income backgrounds, as their parents are dependent on seasonal employment in fishing and small scale construction around the area.

For further details on the School, kindly contact Dr. Rosario Acierto, Honorary Principal of the Sathya Sai School, Pililla at rga423@yahoo.com; and/or Dr. Ramesh Subramaniam, Vice President of the Sri Sathya Sai Organization, which supports the School, at rsubramaniam@adb.org.
